Cingular Firefly Wireless Phone for Kids

Together with the LG Migo from Verizon, the Cingular Firefly is one of a few new cell phones designed for kids under 15 -- and the first one to have hit the market. The first thing that we noticed about the Firefly phone was the fun color combo, with see-through blue and orange--as well as the cool design of the buttons, which look like the wings of a dragonfly--or firefly, as the phone's name suggests. The Firefly is also more durable than it looks in photos. As we checked out its features, we found more things to like--and a few key differences between Cingular's Firefly phone and the LG Migo from Verizon.

The Firefly's Main Functioning: Mom and Dad Keys, 20-entry Phone Book

The Cingular Firefly phone for kids has two main programmable buttons with little mom and dad silhouettes on them (mom's the one with the skirt). We liked this because it makes it very easy for a kid--even in a moment of panic--to find the right button to press in order to call either parent from the Firefly cell phone.

The Cingular Firefly phone also has a PIN-controlled, parent-programmable phone book that holds up to 20 numbers. This gives kids the option to call more parties from the Firefly phone than from the LG Migo--which holds only 4 numbers. Besides this phone book, the other big difference between the Firefly cell phone and the LG Migo cell phone is that the Firefly has an incoming-call-screening feature--also parent-controlled.

The Firefly also has an emergency button that dials directly into 911; we were happy to see this because we think all kids' phones should have some kind of feature for absolute emergencies.

What Else is Cool about the Cingular Firefly Phone?

Kids who own the Firefly cell phone can express themselves through custom faceplates in other cool colors and 12 ringtones. We were also entertained by the jazzy animated graphics on the screen and by the flashing lights that make this cell phone really look like a firefly. Lastly, a silent vibrate mode and a clear speakerphone mode add even more flexibility to the Firefly phone.

The Cingular Firefly's Impact on the Bottom Line

Cingular offers the option to add the Firefly to your existing family plan (but does not at this point offer pre-paid Cingular plans with this phone). Adding the Firefly to a family plan is the cheapest and most convenient option for parents who want to give their kids their own Firefly cell phone. This way, the Firefly phone will cost you only pennies a day, and can be added to an existing cell phone bill.
