Q. How can you afford to give phones away so cheap? What's the catch?
Cell phone companies and their agents get paid a commission whenever they sign up a new customer. It's common practice to give away free cell phones as an incentive for someone to sign up for a monthly wireless contract. The money we lose giving away a free phone is recovered when we get paid our dealer commission. Basically we're making an investment in a new customer.
The only "catch" is that you need to qualify for an account with the carrier and keep your monthly account in good standing by always paying your bills on time.
Q: Why do I need a credit card to get a free phone?
When you sign up for a cell phone, whether it's a free phone or a higher-end phone, you are applying to open a wireless account with a cell phone service provider (for example a carrier such as Verizon Wireless).
Because these services are billed monthly, the carrier has eligibility requirements to make sure that you'll be able to pay your monthly bills. Kids Wireless has to provide the carrier with the information it needs to run a credit check, using your credit card information, to make sure you're eligible.
This is why you must provide a credit card number when ordering a cell phone.

Think of recent instances when it would have made sense to have a cell phone. For example, did you get out of band practice early and couldn't contact anyone to get picked up? Have there been times when your parents needed to reach you, but couldn't?
Also give concrete examples to show that you are responsible and take good care of your things. Things like taking good care of your pets and never losing things at school are both indications that you might be ready to handle the responsibility of your own phone.
